Taj Mahal: The Monument of Love

In word Taj Mahal, Taj means “crown” and Mahal means “palace”. So the whole meaning of the word is “crown of palaces” and it’s very true, if you visit Taj Mahal ever you will be astound to see its glory. Taj Mahal is created with marble located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Taj Mahal was constructed by a Mugal Emperor Shah Jahan, in the memory of his third wife Mumtaj Mahal. Here is the tomb of Mumtaj Mahal. It is one of the best examples of Mughal Art and architecture. The construction of Taj Maha was commissioned in 1632 and was completed in 1653. It took 22 years and around 20,000 artisans and craftsman to build this. In 1983 UNESCO declared it World Heritage site. Around 3 million people visit it every year.

In 1631, Shah Jahan’s third and most loving wife Mumtaj Mahal died, when she was giving birth to their 14th child. This incident had thrown Shah Jahan into a deep grief. And so he decided to construct a monument which shows his love for his wife.

  • Shah Jahan fell in love with the beautiful Mumtaj Mahal and married her. She became his third wife.
  • 1,000 elephants were taken for the transportation of the construction materials from around the cities.
  • Around 28 different varieties of precious stones were used to adorn the Taj with exquisite inlay work.
  • Passages from Quran have been used as decorative elements throughout the complex.
  • 99 names of Allah can be found as inscriptions On the actual tomb of Mumtaz Mahal,.
  • Marbles used in construction of Taj Mahal were brought over from many different regions & countries: Rajasthan, Punjab, China, Tibet, Afghanistan, Srilanka, & Arabia.
